At the time of writing this, I’m sitting outside in the sunshine. Chipsquirrel is sitting on the fence munching. And my legs are aching. The ache of a serious workout including a 4:33 wall sit. This was after a jog and doing uphill traveling jump squats. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be doing this I’d have laughed. Not because I hate exercising – I love it! (Except running. I hate running. But that’s a story for another day.) But because I never had time back then. Or that’s what I said, anyway. So have I somehow managed to figure out how to squeeze an extra hour out of a day? Sadly not. But I’m working on it!
What’s changed then? Well, I’ve learned to make time for myself. I’ve read so many articles about making time for yourself in between the crazy rush of having children and being a family but while I agreed that it was important, I never actually *did* anything about it. Hah, yup. That was me (and I know it’s you, too!). I get it. Life is busy. Kids. Swimming lessons. Birthday parties. School concerts. Add in a part or full time job and the day is packed. And that’s not even getting into the house-things that need doing. Laundry, dishes, the list never ends.
Last year a friend asked me what I was doing for myself. JUST for me. I couldn’t think of anything at all. Not long after that I was introduced to Crystal. She’s the amazing person behind Your Health – Your Choice health and fitness. And she has changed my life. (I’m not exaggerating here.) Every week I look forward to Wednesdays. I love the feeling of tired muscles, knowing that I’ve worked hard. Even when my legs are shaking and I feel like I’m going to fall down the stairs onto my face 😛
One of my favourite memories of Crystal was early on when I started class with her. We were doing planks. I can’t remember how long we had to hold for, but I’m guessing it was around a minute and I remember half dying and saying “I can’t do this.”. When Crystal heard me, she got down on the floor next to me and said “Verity you’ve got this. You can do it. You’re strong. You’re awesome. You. Have. Got. This.” And I did.
Something in my head changed that day. It wasn’t only my body that was getting stronger, it was my mind. Since then I’ve thrown myself headfirst into things that I never would’ve done before. Things that are scary. Things that are uncomfortable (like cold showers). Things that hurt (like a 2:30 plank – YES I did that!). Things that I never thought I’d be able to do. It started with a tiny step and it has snowballed.

If you think about it, most things were impossible until somebody did them. You don’t have to win first place in a marathon. But try something new today. Push your own boundaries. Master a new skill. Fail miserably, and then try again. Be a little bit like the Queen in Alice in Wonderland. But instead of *thinking* six impossible things before breakfast, do them! (It’s okay to start with one 🙂 But beware, it’s totally addictive!)
